BAGNO VIGNONI
Beneath the high ground of Borgo Vignoni lies the thermal centre; first the Etruscans, followed by the Romans, the Tignosi, the Salimbeni and Siena: interest centred on those famous waters so that Pius the Second built his own palace in front of the large, sixteenth century bath in the centre of the town. Around it are the buildings constructed by Bernardo Rossellino. St. Caterina da Siena and Lorenzo the Magnificent used to take the waters, which are recommended for treating respiratory, gynaecological and rheumatic diseases via inhalations, mud-baths and balneotherapy. Water runs in a small canal, the “gorello”, from the bath with a portico on one side- scenario for summer events- towards a splendid panoramic view of the valley, which suddenly overlooks the gorge of the Orcia: it has also kept secret the volcano, the steep ascents and the hills.
